What Is RTGS? Real-Time Settlement for High-Value Transfers

RTGS, or Real Time Gross Settlement, is a bank transfer system in India designed specifically for high-value transactions, where each transfer is settled individually and immediately, rather than in batches like NEFT.

How RTGS Differs From Other Transfer Methods

The defining feature of RTGS is that transfers are settled one at a time, in real time — "gross settlement" means each transaction is processed and finalized on its own, without being combined or netted with other transactions. This makes RTGS particularly suited to large transfers where immediate, individual settlement matters, such as a ₹15,00,000 property transaction payment or a large business-to-business payment.

RTGS in India has a minimum transaction amount, currently set at ₹2 lakh, which distinguishes it from NEFT and IMPS, both of which have no minimum and are generally used for smaller transfers.

When RTGS Makes Sense

RTGS is typically used for significant, time-sensitive payments where confirmation of immediate settlement matters — large property transactions, business payments, or transfers where the recipient needs certainty that funds have cleared right away rather than within a broader processing window. For amounts below the ₹2 lakh minimum, NEFT, IMPS, or UPI are the more appropriate options.

Cost and Availability

Like NEFT, RTGS fees vary by bank, with some banks waiving fees for online RTGS transfers while others charge based on the transaction amount. RTGS in India is now also available 24×7, following RBI's move to expand its availability beyond traditional banking hours, matching the broader shift toward round-the-clock digital payment access.

FAQ

Can RTGS be used for amounts below ₹2 lakh? No, RTGS specifically requires a minimum of ₹2 lakh per transaction — smaller amounts need to go through NEFT, IMPS, or UPI instead.

Is RTGS safer than NEFT for large amounts? Both are secure bank-regulated systems; RTGS is chosen for large amounts primarily for its immediate, individual settlement rather than any difference in underlying security.

RTGS exists specifically to give large transfers immediate, guaranteed settlement, making it the appropriate tool for high-value, time-sensitive payments rather than everyday transactions. This is general information, not personalized financial advice.
