What Is IMPS? Instant Transfers Around the Clock
IMPS, or Immediate Payment Service, is an instant, 24×7 electronic fund transfer system in India, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India, that allows money to move between bank accounts within seconds, any time of day, including weekends and holidays.
How IMPS Works
Unlike NEFT's batch-based processing, IMPS settles each transaction individually and instantly, similar in speed to UPI, but IMPS was actually developed and widely adopted before UPI became dominant. Transfers can be made using the recipient's account number and IFSC code, or in many banking apps, using a registered mobile number linked to a Mobile Money Identifier (MMID).
A person needing to urgently send ₹25,000 to a family member on a Sunday evening, for instance, can rely on IMPS to complete the transfer within moments, at a time when older batch-based systems like traditional NEFT would have delayed processing.
IMPS vs. UPI: Why Both Still Exist
With UPI now handling the vast majority of everyday instant transfers in India, IMPS is used less directly by individual consumers, but it still operates as important underlying infrastructure — many banking apps use IMPS behind the scenes for certain transfer types, and it remains a direct option for transfers that don't go through a UPI ID, such as transfers using just an account number and IFSC code.
For most everyday personal transfers, UPI has become the simpler front-end choice, while IMPS continues to serve as a reliable instant-transfer backbone.
Transaction Limits and Fees
IMPS transfer limits are generally set by individual banks and can vary, often ranging up to a few lakh rupees per transaction depending on the bank and account type. Fees, where applicable, are usually modest and vary by bank, with some banks offering free IMPS transfers through their mobile app or net banking.
FAQ
